As a member of the crafters' world, it is a well known fact that the jewelry department is one of the most competitive and interesting category. In my 3 years doing craft shows, I'm so amazed on the diversity of the jewelry artists I've met - beaders, metalsmith, clay artists, recycled, upcycled and list goes on. Some went through formal jewelry schools while others are self-taught. I was even surprised to have met some who do not wear their own creations!

Whatever materials you use, style you make, crafting habits you have, we do all have one thing in common. We have our own unique, crazy moments and interesting experiences as artists and business owners that we can share. This 2011, I decided to feature fellow jewelry lovers every week and a month's ad placement here on my blog. I know what you're thinking... What's the catch? Nothing! Everything is FREE. Almost everyone knows that October is the "PINK" month. Designers and shops sell numerous items to be donated to organizations that support the "Fight for the Cure" of breast cancer.

Yesterday while looking for some shops to feature, a fellow ETSYNJ team member recommended me this cute, little shop at Etsy. As a mom of 4 young kids, I was totally touched by the kindness of the people who run this online store. Instead of giving 100% of the sales to organizations, they opt to directly deposit it to the 529 College Fund of 3 young girls who lost a mother to the disease. As what Julie, the shop owner said, "The girls may not have their mother back but they will know that there are people out there who care."

Moved, I'm now dedicating my etsy shop's PINK Section to the cause. This month, 50% of the sales from this section will be donated to Courage for Kristi. Check out the sites below for gift ideas. Believe me shopping will never feel so good.

The Journey is not Over

It's been a while since I had my last post. Some might think that I just abandoned my business and moved on. Honestly, I went on a two-month long vacation to visit my parents. It's been a while (10 years to be exact) since I last saw them. Why? Long story but nothing dramatic. Just so happens that they are on the other side of the globe. About 20 hours flight away :D

During my online absence, I've found out that it is so easy to just stop and have an "easier" life. Crafters and small business owners, you know what I mean. YUP, I even thought of redoing my resume' and start job hunting.

One day however, while sorting through my files, I came across my "dream book". What's a dream book? It's just a notebook that I filled with pictures and small notes of what I would like to have and achieve in my life. As I scan it, a new sense of energy filled me. I have this list of goals and possible ways of attaining them. There were some things that were crossed out since it's already done.

Yes, I have already accomplished some steps. (no matter how small it may seem to others) So why do I have to stop what I'm doing now? There's no point of going to another unknown path with no certain goal in mind. As long as there are steps to do and goals to accomplish ending one's journey is never over. What do you think?

Did I abandon you?

I can't believe it's been 2 months since my last post. So many things had happened and my mind is filled with ideas and experiences. Today I realized that the main reason why I failed to update this blog is not that I have nothing to say or write. It's the fear of "signing in" and the idea that I might take hours to come up with a post.

This feeling has thought me a valuable lesson. Fear is really paralyzing. The only way to combat it is to face upfront and start doing what we want to do.

This post just took me less than 10 mins. See what i could have done if I haven't listened to that "fear voice" at the back of my head.

Time's my friend today

I'm constantly struggling to finish things everyday. Always in a rush, I feel so exhausted around this time. Today however, is a big exemption. Time seems to be a so friendly to me. Everytime, I look at the clock, I wonder if my clock is functioning right. I've accomplished a lot already and it's only past 3pm EST. My stress level is so low. Thank God! What's my secret? I'll let you know once I'm done with this time-management experiment.

As I continue to try to make this blog interesting, I developed this habit of just browsing through Etsy and look for items that seem to reflect my mood during writing. Of course, I contact the owner of the photo first before using it. Plus, I make sure to include a link to their shop. It costs me nothing and I don't ask any compensation or exchange deals. Come on, we're all on the same boat here --- no advertising budget! If the item caught my attention, I'll definitely post it.

Anyway, last week I got two messages from fellow Etsian, asking permission to use a certain photo for their blog. I felt so flattered and happy! Not only did they help me advertise that day, who wouldn't want free exposure right? These complete strangers had brightened my day and given me some support. I felt so blessed!

Though the idea of asking compensation for features and ad space still swirl at the back of my head, I promised not to do so. Sometimes just being nice gives enough karma that no amount of money can buy.

It's been almost 30 days since I've decided to be an active ETSY seller. I've tried to do what most ETSY sellers are doing to get that "coveted" sale.
1. take good photos
2. write interesting and SEO friendly descriptions
3. go to the forums and post
4. join my Teams

5. twitter

6. facebook
7. blog
8. research on promotion ideas
9. and do steps 1-8 all over again.
Did I mention that I still need to do my products, packaging, shipping, inventory, business files and run my household at the same time?

I can't help but raise an eyebrow and smile when I hear these:

"Oh, you JUST stay home!"
"Lucky you"
" I hate going to work."
"At least your not like me, I'm so tired at the office."

If they only knew...right Etsy people?

Day 6 One-A -Day Series "TimeEaters"

When I made my first weekend review about this series, I've found out that there are so many "time eaters" (I don't' call it wasters since they are part of everyday living) that I need to address inorder for me to maximize my accomplishments. These are:
1. Disorganized files --- I 've been spending a total of 60 minutes looking for things or files.
2. Multi-tasking to the extreme.
3. Clutter --- I know most of you crafters can relate.
4. Habits --- Yes, habits are really hard to break but I'm committing on changing something this year.
5. Focus --- sometimes I'm easily distracted, other time, so caught up with one thing.

To make this challenge more interesting, I'm also including ONE special TO-Do that will give me satisfaction and evetually, manage my time more.

One a Day Series Weekend Review

Last weekend, I decided to evaluate my One-A-Day Series. I realized that in order to accomplish more on a given day, I have to befriend TIME. Yes, the 24 hour phenomenon that we experience everyday. Setting goals and having a strategy needs a specific timeframe in order for something to be brought into reality. Most of us feel that we don't have much time. Since we can't do anything to extend it to 25- or even 26 hours, it's up to us to work with it.

So what are you doing to maximize your time?

Day 5 - One a Day Series

Yesterday turned out great in the end. After posting on the blog, I searched Blackeyedpeas' "I got a feeling", turned up the volume of my laptop and started moving! In the end,
I was able to clean the living room (those with more than 2 young kids would know how bad it can be!)
Feature a Team mates' item.
Sort, organize and compiled the scattered Business Goals and Strategies (was on loose sheets of paper)
Helped my Darling Daughter finish her homework (she's having one of those I can't do it days)
Skip my cheesecake dessert
I even got a few minutes of cuddle time with the kids.

As for today,
I sold a necklace at the school parking lot.

Day Four -One A Day Series

It's just Day 4 and I'm already struggling with the challenge. Important lesson I learned today is that breaking habits are really hard but it's not impossible. We just need to be reminded and start.

Last night, I totally forgot to press finish and my listing wasn't completed. To compensate, I listed 2 today. Since I started on the computer really early, I became more complacent with time which eventually led to bigger issues. It's 6 pm and I'm really on a rush to finish things. Why? Because I became so focused on a particular category that I started to ignore the others.

Today, my house is a mess. My paperwork are all over the place. Guess what's next? I'm cranky with the kids!!! Next thing I knew, I'm totally stressed out!

With a little reminder, (Thanks Etsy NJ team) I just had a change of heart. The day isn't over yet and I think I can still make it work. Have to go now and will let you know the updates later.

Before I forget, I just saw this and got inspired. Too close, it's chaotic. But if I step back a bit, I can see the beauty of something. It's today's my Ray of Hope.

Day 3 - One A Day

I'm on Day 3 and something kicked in... Some of my readers might think that those 7 Categories are just the things I'm doing in a day. (Boy I wish!!!) As I've mentioned earlier, I promised myself to reduce stress by trying to live a balanced life this 2010. If all the daily demands of a working mom, most of the time an aspect or more is pushed aside making one feel guilty (another source of stress).

By accomplishing 1 thing in each category, I feel that I can smile at night knowing that I didn't leave anything behind.

Happy New Year everyone! As I say "Hi" to 2010, I can't help but feel overwhelmed with all the things I would like to do and accomplish. Yesterday, I already had a "meltdown" and it's only Jan.3. Yikes! For someone who used to give trainings on Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, it's a total eye-opener.

When things seem to be all in the Urgent-Important grid, stress level will defintiely go off the roof. But what would a mom of 4 (all under 7), business owner, wife do? (I have to edit my jobs since it's not what this blog is all about =) When prioritizing is not an option, I've decided to go with the basic I called One-a-Day.

That is doing just ONE thing on each Category and Finish (yes finish it) on that day.

3. Business Promotion
4. Loose that last 20 lbs
5. Business files
6. Kids

CountDown to 2010

I can't believe 2009 is almost over. As I go through my "activity notes" --- my business notebook that holds my year's sales, craft show experiences, ideas and evaluations, so many ideas and resolutions are boiling in my head. One of the best lessons I learned this year is the importance of planning things way ahead of time. If I do, I can have enough time to focus on advertising.

Being a picky buyer and a bargain hunter, I always have my eyebrows raised on buying things that are non-essentials. Two weeks ago, while looking for unique gift ideas, I came across this beautiful piece of decorative soap. Yup! I used to consider shaped soaps as decorative after a bad experience years ago. Anyway, since this pink rose soap has captured my attention and is not really pricey, I convinced myself that it's alright to take a risk.

When I received my package yesterday, I was so surprised how great the packaging smelled. What a great perk. I have a nice looking and smelling decor. Out of curiosity, I used it. Sun's out and the lighting was perfect. What more can I ask for? Finally, I was able to have a technique to get decent jewelry photos. As most jewelry artists (who take their own product photos) would say, the process of taking a nice photograph is not easy. So many factors are to be considered --- the item itself, background, camera and it's settings and most importantly the proper lighting. After experiementing for 3 years (yes 3 years!!!), I now know what time of the day, part of the house, and light intensity works best for my beloved jewelries. Today. even at 25F temperature outside, the mood is definitely perfect. My 45 minute photoshoot (the ideal time) went out pretty well. Check it out.

craft show surprise

Selling at craft shows is always full of surprises. Every show is a learning experience since you really don't know how the shoppers would behave.

In a recent show for instance, I did my best to prepare all my items --- I brought all my low end and high end items with me. I wanted to be sure that I got what the customers will be looking for. My competitive nature tells me that this should be my first sell out show.

Guess what? No matter how hard I prepared, the market indeed unpredictable. The big sellers?

Two vendors who sell pet toys...!!! And we're not even a pet show. All of us vendors were so amazed.

At the end of the day, I still got this smile... Even if this isn't my sell out show... I was able to do good even if I'm competing with pet products.=)

Dec.5 Craft Show

Since it's my first time in this show, I don't know what to expect. I'll be bringing all my high end and low priced items to be sure. =)

Black friday

Last Thanksgiving, aside from being busy with the cooking and baking, I began to work. That is prepare my website and etsy shop for Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The experience is both exciting and frustrating at the same time.

These are the few things I learned as a retailer about this important shopping day:

1. Prepare ahead of time. Upload items earlier during the week and not on the last minute. It's stressful when you see the clock ticking.
2. Advertise. Advertise... and Advertise! At least a week before or even earlier. Now I know what my inbox and mailbox are full 2 weeks before Thanksgiving.
3. It's the perfect time to reconnect with past clients. Not only for marketing purposes but to thank them for trusting a budding company.

During the early days of my business, jewelry photographs were not included on my top 10 TO DO list. Since my pieces are one of a kind --- which means only ONE is made and I do upfront selling, having photos seemed just extra work.

When I started my website, I suddenly felt the urgency to have great photos ---- for website sales, business cards, catalogs, marketing materials and even just for inventory purposes. It's so amazing how pictures can make a bargain item look extra special. At the same time, it can make an outstanding piece look totally unattractive.

Today is the the birthday of my BFF Ellaine. It's been years since we've seen each other. How ironic that I've been making great jewelries for weddings yet I missed her special day. Thank God, she forgave me already!

As a Designer, I'm always in a look out for inspiration. For this fall, my attention was drawn to earthy brown tones. To my surprise, I came across these lovely handcrafted collectible bags. After chatting with its designer, I learned that these bags aren't just pretty but earth-friendly as well. Would you believe it's made from fallen acacia trees and grass fibers? About 4 dozen of each design can be made due to the rarity of the materials!

Starting from Scatch

Starting a jewelry business from scratch is a real challenge. Whatever a person's background, a company will definitely has it's ups and downs, misses and hits, yeheys and oopppss. There are days when I'm like an energizer bunny and would like to just finish everything. Some days, though I hate to admit it, when I wouldn't even want to bother working at all.

For some, having a business is a just a part-time job. Others a source of extra money for shopping. For the fortunate few, a primary source of income. On my part though, my jewerly business is my life --- my passion, my choice, my stepping stone. Something I would like to share with. Join me as I go thru this journey. Quest for a perfect website Part 1

http://www.jaydemia.com was created last April 2008. My vision is have a company website that will not only sell one-of-a-kind handmade jewelries but also an information center for all those interested in jewelries. Demographic wise, I know it's really broad. Focus wise, I just really want an elegant looking, user friendly site that won't drill a hole in my pocket.

After a few months of research, I've finally decided to subscribe to www.homestead.com. For less than $25 a month, I'll have the basic things I like for my website--- personal domain, 5 email addresses, paypal shopping cart and design flexibility.

In just 3 days, I have a nice looking starter site. I asked my friends for feedback and they did give me the best opinions --- pretty but it's not distinctive since it's from the free templates, needs pictures of the products and more information.

Since then, I started my quest for my dream website.

Our first website --- in house template in homestead.com... a white page with a pink flower on the upper left corner... elegant design? yes! contents --- missing!
